Co-ordinators Heather Larnach and Mandy Wilding say the program is already making a difference to the lives of women losing their hair as a result of chemotherapy.
The Daffodil Cancer Cottage Wig Library has a range of wigs, hairpieces and turbans available.
Ms Wilding said all women like to feel beautiful, and wigs and headwear can help to restore a patient’s appearance, self image and confidence.
The project came about because nursing unit manager Marita Tipene saw a growing need to establish a wig library to complement the range of services on offer.
“Today’s wigs have come such a long way due to advances in construction, as well as state of the art synthetic fibres and human hair processing techniques,” Ms Wilding said.
“Synthetic wigs come in exquisite colours, are more natural looking and are very durable. They are lightweight, require little washing and don’t need to be restyled.
“Human hair wigs are much like your own hair. They look natural and feel like real hair. Real hair wigs can be cut, washed and styled. They do require more maintenance.”
Daffodil Cancer Cottage Wig Library can offer both choices. Assistance can also be provided for people to buy wigs privately.
The service offered in the wig library is personal, discreet and given with care and compassion.
“When someone loses their hair it can be an emotional time. It’s such a great service to be able to offer people,” Ms Larnach said.
“So far six patients have taken advantage of it and they are very happy with their wigs. It makes such a difference to them and it is wonderful to see their eyes light up.”
The women said the wig library kicked off with a beautiful donation by Pantene of some real hair wigs.
Ms Wilding said a donation of $50 a wig is greatly appreciated to assist the library in continuing to provide the best quality
contemporary wigs. This donation will go to the upkeep of the wigs and for the purchase of new wigs. Wigs can be returned after the duration of treatment or after hair grows back and a refund of $30 will be given.
