Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Bathurst MP Paul Toole yesterday made a joint announcement that Burton Contractors had won the tender to complete the work.
“The government provided $22 million this year to start work on the $85 million highway upgrade,” Mr Gay said.
“This means work will start in October this year, weather permitting. The upgrade work, from just west of Boyd Street to just east of Ashworth Drive, will involve rebuilding and widening the highway to provide a four- lane divided road with a central concrete median.
“Since coming to office in March 2011, the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has invested a record $569 million to fast track upgrades of the Great Western Highway.”
Mr Gay said the government was determined to improve traffic movement and ensure a safer journey for more than 20,700 motorists who use the highway each day.
“The Great Western Highway is not only the main arterial road for communities of the Blue Mountains, it also serves as a vital transport link between central and western NSW and the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area,” he said.
Mr Toole said the project included building a new bridge over Boyd Creek and intersection upgrades at Boyd Street, View Street and Pat O’Leary Drive.
“There will be new roundabouts at Littlebourne Street and Ashworth Drive,” Mr Toole said.
“New pedestrian and cyclist access will also be provided. This project is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to improve road safety and freight efficiency right across this state.”
