Posts have appeared on Facebook with headlines such as 'Ebola reported in central west NSW Dubbo' and 'Ebola case confirmed in Australia' with a photograph of a 'Welcome to Parkes' sign.
Clicking on these stories takes Facebook users to the website feednewz.com, where a page informs the reader they have been the victim of a prank and listing the number of people who have clicked on the link.
As of 12pm on Tuesday there had been over 5,000 "trolled people" who had clicked on the Dubbo story link.
There have been no reported cases of ebola in New South Wales, but an 18-year-old, who arrived in Australia 11 days ago with eight other family members, has been in home quarantine in Brisbane pending testing for the disease.
Queensland state chief health officer Jeannette Young said on Sunday the chances of the teenager, who travelled to Australia from Guinea, having ebola were "unlikely".
The World Health Organisation believes global cases of ebola now exceed 10,000.
