SID Kallas Oval fosters wonderful memories for the St Pat’s Group 10 premier league side and they’ll hope to create more of them when they travel there to face the Cowra Magpies tomorrow.
Pat’s would love to put on a re-enactment of what took place there in last year’s grand final when they ran away with a 34-12 win to secure their sixth title.
All the signs are there that the Saints can make it happen once again, having not only beaten the Magpies earlier this season, but also coming off a clinical
victory over the Blayney Bears.
With a team hampered far less by injuries than the last time they faced the Magpies it gives Pat’s coach Kurt Hancock all the more reason to feel confident for the trip.
“Cowra still have an outside chance to make the semi-finals so they’ll be desperate and probably throwing the ball around a fair bit, and that’s when they play their best footy I think,” Hancock said.
“Our goal over our last month of football has been to control the middle and play upbeat, fast football and I think there will be a lot of points scored for both teams this week because of that.
“Beginning from the very first game last year, there has been a good rivalry between the two clubs and it has continued all the way through. We’re expecting their best footy especially playing at home.
“We have to hope that we can control enough of the game to allow the likes of Benjamin John and Nathan Lawrence to do their thing and take over.”
An understrength Pat’s side pulled through for a 24-22 win over the Magpies at the Sportsground in May.
Magpies come into this match sitting six points off Pat’s and with one less game in hand, making it a do-or-die affair for the hosts.
A Pat’s win would put an end once- and-for-all to any of Cowra’s faint remaining finals hopes.
Pat’s themselves are not long out of a period of the season where they were part of a four-way log jam for fifth spot, but having shaken free of Cowra and Panthers, they only have to see off Orange Hawks to make sure of another finals berth.
And fifth isn’t going to satisfy.
“We are still looking at hopefully making a run for fourth and going past Blayney,” Hancock said.
“We want to get a final, we want to go into the semis red-hot and playing our best football because I think it is good enough to challenge the top teams.
“Having said all that, even our win over Blayney last week won’t matter at all if we can’t back it up this week against the Magpies. If we’re not beating the teams outside the five, what’s the point of trying to compete with the teams in it.”
New front-row addition Travis Wininara was powerful against Blayney and will retain his spot in the front-row alongside Luke Newsome adding a new dimension to their side.
Kick-off against the Magpies is 1.50pm.
