Now they have a men’s first grade title.
A double in the second half from regular goal-scoring threat Jacob Soetens gave AFC a 2-0 win over CSU at Proctor Park on Sunday.
Soetens shrugged off a defender to slide a shot into the bottom left of the net before sealing the deal with a successful penalty kick in the final minutes of regular time.
The ‘Yellow Submarine’ learned their lesson from a defeat to CSU in the major semi-final to take their maiden first grade success.
Coach Jack Dwyer knew he had a strong side on his hands, but was still pleasantly surprised to get a victory in such a short space of time.
“It started out as just a bunch of mates wanting to come out and have a bit of fun and I think we brought that to the game,” he said.
“We’ve enjoyed our football this season and the last two before that. It’s great to come out as a new club with a premiership and a minor premiership in our third year.
“Having our winning streak broken dampened our spirits a bit, but to pick ourselves up after that loss was a great effort from the boys.
“Jacob Soetens has been spectacular all season. I can’t thank the guy enough for coming across to the team and scoring all the goals. Brayden North as captain has been great taking the boys through all season ... and Tim Daley was amazing in goals.”
After their second grade side picked up a penalty shoot-out win, CSU’s first grade team came out also looking like a winning side for the opening 10 minutes of the match.
Abercrombie struggled to get the ball beyond their own midfield in that time as CSU were busy firing off shot after shot.
James Shaw got off three attempts, while Chris New-Tolley will be disappointed he didn’t make more of his effort when open at the top of the box, firing well high.
A scramble in front of the Stags’ goal 13 minutes in somehow didn’t result in a goal for AFC as the ball was cleared away, but from that point on the match started to even out.
Josh Hugo got off the best shot for AFC in the opening half when his strike just curved right of the goal.
Just minutes after coming onto the field, CSU’s Luke Brennan went close when he got on the end of a New-Tolley pass, but Daley came out of goal to defuse the danger.
Entertaining end-to-end soccer marked the start of the second half.
Opposite number sevens Soetens and Josh Brown each had early chances.
New-Tolley’s glancing header went just left of the mark before Paul Long had a pair of shots on goal for Abercrombie.
The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Soetens outran his defender to bring the ball into the CSU box and poke it home past a diving Pat Hogan.
Catch-up soccer didn’t sit well with CSU who, despite finding some shots, never regained the intensity they had shown in the opening half.
When Abercrombie’s Michael Betts was brought down inside the CSU penalty area after a strong run along the baseline, the spot kick was awarded.
Hogan got a hand to the ball with his dive to the right, but there was enough power in Soetens’ shot to trickle into the goal.
“We didn’t stick to our game plan. We’re a good side when playing along the ground, playing wide and playing possession football. We let ourselves down falling into the long ball trap and playing their style of football,” CSU coach Brett Russell said.
“We went back to a formation for the final that we used earlier in the season that had netted us more goals, so it was less defensive and more attacking.
“We didn’t take those opportunities in the first half. We probably had three in that opening half hour that we probably would have scored in the first six rounds of this year.”
