This marked the start of the CBD’s transformation into a winter wonderland for the 15-day, family-friendly event.
The huge McDonald’s Bathurst Ice Rink will take centre stage during the festival, and many events will be held in and around it.
Measuring 18 metres by 20m, the rink is bigger than last year, and is being constructed on Russell Street, outside Bathurst Court House.
Bathurst mayor Gary Rush inspected the construction works on Monday and confirmed the community’s excitement for the festival is building.
“People are particularly excited about having the ice rink and the illumination back,” he said.
“The festival was incredibly popular last year, and in particular the ice-skating.
“As a result we’ve increased the size of the outdoor ice skating rink and moved it onto Russell Street, adjacent to the Court House.”
Tickets to skate during last year’s winter festival were a sell-out, and Cr Rush has urged people to book on time to ensure they receive their preferred slot.
More than 5100 tickets have been booked so far, but there are still many more available.
For those not keen for a skate, Cr Rush encouraged them to take a ride on the giant ferris wheel.
The 15-metre-high ride is an addition to the festival and will be located on Russell Street, outside the council building, for the duration of the festival. Tickets are $5 each.
Also new this year will be a cafe which will be located next to the ice rink.
Cr Rush said last year’s festival was hugely popular, attracting thousands of people to the city.
“Last year was potentially a little bit risky to hold it in winter time. I think Bathurstians are well-known for hibernating in winter because of the cold,” he said of the inaugural festival.
“I think that was part of the fun last year. People rugged up, got out, made the most of it, embraced the cold.”
Bookings for the ice rink are essential.
