The team – representing Western Districts – comprised of lead Judy Davis, skip Merle Stephens and Cindy McGrath were far too strong for their Nepean zone opponents St Mary’s in a dominant 20-4 victory.
State junior representative McGrath said even just making through as the Western Districts representatives came as a surprise for herself and her teammates.
“We had to go through Western Districts first. There were a numerous amount of games we had to win and we had to win all of them to make it through,” she said.
“This is the first time the three of us in triples have actually made it through to even represent Western Districts.
“I don’t think any of us ever expected to make it this far so it’s really good.”
The win makes the Majellain trio the top triples club team from Bathurst right through Hazlebrook, which is the reach of the Western Districts zone.
Majellan women’s club president Pauline Clark said she wasn’t so surprised to see the Bathurst trio progress.
“I wasn’t surprised to see them win. Cindy is in a state team and Merle, the skip, has been one of the best draw bowlers in Bathurst for years,” she said.
“I honestly thought it would be a closer game but obviously hoped our team would still win. In the end the other team ended it early with two ends still to play.
“I think they’ll be a good chance at state. They’ll be stepping up a level and playing the best in the state but any team can win on their day.”
Western Districts’ two others successes over their Nepean zone rivals came courtesy of Lithgow City.
City’s Fay King was victorious in singles and the club’s open pairs team also won.
Davis, Stephens and McGrath will be off to Tuncurry for the Inter-Zone Sides Championship from September 10-12.
