And he did it with a win aboard the horse of the year.
Rue picked up his 47th win of the season at Bathurst when he guided the Peter Bullock trained Skirmish to victory in the Shannon Springs Pace (2,260 metres).
It was eighth time the three-year-old Mach Three x Whanau gelding had saluted at his home track, the season also bringing him a third placing and pair of runner-up finishes.
Rue made his move with the $3.30 chance as the bell sounded, coming from the rear of the field to sit outside leader Missed By Red.
Skirmish then found the lead down the home straight and held off his rivals, winning by 2¾m over Missed By Red ($7.70).
“I thought I’d slip around them, I knew the outside position was the place to be,” Rue said. “He really impressed me tonight.”
