A quick look at the top 10 most borrowed books in 2016 reveals fiction authors that many people would be familiar with.
British thriller writer Lee Child and American detective and crime author Michael Connelly featured twice in the list.
Topping the list of most read books was Make Me by Lee Child, followed by The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, and in third was Personal: A Jack Reacher Novel again by Lee Child.
Bathurst City Library manager Patou Clerc said she was not surprised by the authors and books that featured in the list.
“Make Me by Lee Child is so popular that we have 14 copies,” she said.
Ms Clerc said for many people as soon as they find an author they like they will read everything produced by them.
“If you’ve got a favourite author you wait for the next one [new book],” she said.
For non-fiction readers, the most popular book was One Life: My Mother’s Story by Kate Grenville, followed by The Road to Ruin: How Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin Destroyed their own Government by Niki Savva.
Children were also big readers last year with Australian children's book author and comedy writer Andy Griffiths the most popular with five books in the top 10 junior fiction category.
The most popular junior non-fiction book was Guinness World Records 2015, followed by Minecraft Handbook, Construction Handbook.

Popularity of authors and books was just one factor when the library was considering new book purchases.
“I also like the feeling of serendipity in the library and putting something there that people don’t expect,” Ms Clerc said.
