Ian Pollet earns 9th Dan black belt in karate

In the process Hanshi Pollet became the first Australian graded to the Okinawa-Kan Federation’s 9th Dan by Grand Master Kiichi Nakamoto, and he is the 21st in the world.

Pollet was “humbled and deeply moved” upon reaching the new grade.

”It’s a very high grade and a lot of respect comes with that. It’s a lifetime of work and not something that just happens overnight. There’s 50 years of work that has gone into this grade,” he said.

“There’s been times of injury, times of competitions, plenty of ups and downs, but it has been full of great experiences. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that every time you think you know something, you don’t know anything.

“I’ve been to a lot of countries and met a lot of people, but it’s not like it has all ended. It’s all just started.”

Grand Master Nakamoto also delivered seminars at Pollet’s Martial Arts Centre, alongside Pollet’s grading.

The teachings from one of finest weapons and karate Grand Masters in Okinawa was a special experience for those in attendance.

Kiichi Nakamoto is a direct descendant of the Uhugusuku Samurai Family, the personal bodyguards of the Okinawa King.

Along with his historic bloodline Nakamoto is a 10th Degree Grand Master of weaponry and Goju ryu Karate.

Pollet could not speak more highly of his teacher.

“My karate and weapons teacher is an amazing man. To study under him has been unbelievable,” he said.

“To be examined by a living legend like Hanshi Nakamoto is special. He got his 10^th Dan recognised by the emperor. He lives his life like a Grand Master and he conducts himself properly.

“Our students have certainly progressed to a new level of understanding in their martial arts – not just physically but spiritually, a deeper understanding to the meaning of bushido – the way of the warrior, a way of life.”

Pollet had spent 10 years at the 8^th Dan level prior to his grading on Sunday.
