Captain Schumacher was full of praise for his team’s gigantic effort against one of the tall poppy sides.
Schumacher, after being out of action for a few months due to a knee injury, played very steady tennis, even though only winning one set.
But it was Rod’s uncanny knack of guiding his players to lift at the pressure points that made the difference. Experience was definitely the key on his behalf.
No doubt the star player in this match was Barry Lindsay for the Koalas, who won all of his four sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. It was truly an inspirational performance by Lindsay, who seems to improve week in, week out.
Lindsay is not a player to be taken lightly and rates as a very dangerous player to watch in his future matches.
Kevin Tree for the Koalas rallied well all day, playing some hard-hitting forehands and crafty net shots. Harry Dang looked in good touch, playing very solidly from the base line. The Koalas’ Sarah Tree has played better tennis, but held her own when called upon.
Barry Hurst battled on gamely all day and, at some points, looked quite solid. Hurst won two of his four sets 6-4, 6-4. The Koalas are now the team to beat and have firmed into favouritism at 2-1.
The second match was a thriller between the Wallabies and the Possums. However, it was the Wallabies, captained by Jason Honeyman, who prevailed six sets all, 65 games to 58.
Captain Honeyman was all smiles after his team’s victory and put it down to pure guts.
Possums captain John Bullock was absolutely gobsmacked after the match, but gave full credit to the Wallabies for their gutsy win.
The star players of the round were Barry Lindsay and Bryan Reri. Of all the 24 players on the court, they won all their four sets 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 ,6-1, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
Well, folks, it was another great weekend of tennis.
Good hitting.
