We have all experienced being let down by someone’s words.
Many people are affected by the words they read in social media which we all have so readily available today.
The terrible tragedy is that some people – young people, especially – have even gone to the awful extremes of taking their lives because they have believed in the words they see on the screens of their mobiles.
If these words that are spoken and written have such a negative response, then the question remains now more than ever, whose word can we trust?
We are told in the Bible, which is essentially God’s word, that we can trust the word of God.
Many verses express this, people who wrote the following verses experienced this truth.
Matthew, one of Jesus’ disciples, lived and worked alongside him in the time He lived on this earth.
Matthew was witness to the fulfilment of the many verses which talked about a coming Saviour.
He came to the realisation that Jesus was the one the God’s word was talking about and quoted Jesus’ own words in his gospel: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Mt 4:4)
And the writer of many Psalms, ancient songs which expressed the writers’ experience of God and life, David, was a man after God’s own heart.
David experienced God in his life and said: “God's Word is true.” (Ps 119:160)
There are many more verses that talk about God’s word being Truth and hearing these words bring life to those who accept it in their lives.
With all the words which crowd our lives each day in the media and in our lives, sometimes can’t get away from it, especially the negative or words which tell us how we should live and what we need.
So where do we turn so we can get some respite?
Come back to the truth, which is refreshing and enlightening, come back to the words of God.
As the following verse from another Psalm says: “Your word (God’s word) is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
