Goldminers had to wait until the fifth round of the competition to enjoy a match at the Bathurst Indoor Sports Stadium and they didn’t disappoint their supporters in a convincing victory.
With the Bears coming to the city with two wins from three games the Goldminers were expecting a much-improved Goulburn squad, but even from the early stages Bathurst were a cut above.
Goldminers snuffed out the Bears’ outside shooting and didn’t allow them to hit a single three-point shot all match.
Claire Woolmington led the scoring for the Goldminers with 18 points. Sophie Kleeman (14) and Haylee Lepaio (12) were next best.
We started off strong and we were just able to sub people in, like for like. That kept the pressure on and it got to Goulburn after a while.
- Paul Masters
Goldminers co-coach Paul Masters was able to give all his players plenty of court time in the big win.
“We almost had our full squad. We started off strong and we were just able to sub people in, like for like. That kept the pressure on and it got to Goulburn after a while,” he said.
“We got out to a 30-point lead and we were able to try some different stuff. Some of it worked and some of it didn’t. It was just to give a bit of an idea of what we could do, but we were still able to keep that 30-point lead.”
By the time Goulburn had escaped single figures on the scoreboard, early in the second quarter, Goldminers sat on 33 points.
The hosts slowly built that lead up throughout the match while bringing several Bears players into foul trouble.
Two Bears players were fouled out of the contest before the final whistle.
Victory for the Goldminers has kept them second on the table with four wins from five games.
“Once all the other sports slow down a bit and we get more people to training we can only get better,” Masters said.
“Getting people to training with work and uni commitments is hard. Coming into the end of the season, down the track, we’re going to need that. At the moment we’re doing alright.”
Goldminers now have a three week break until their next match – another meeting with Goulburn.
