AN alleged thief threw a roll of silverside at a witness who tried to stop him leaving the scene of the crime, according to Bathurst police.

Police allege the 46-year-old man entered a Woolworths supermarket in Bathurst over the weekend and was seen by staff to be filling a backpack with meat.
The man then walked out of the store without paying.
A witness approached the man, only to have a roll of silverside thrown at him as the alleged thief kept walking.
The man was later arrested by police and charged with stealing a large quantity of meat.
Stolen purse found in bathroom
A WOMAN who left her purse unattended while she went for a dance at a local licensed premises has been robbed in her absence.
Police said the woman left her purse on a table for just five minutes while she hit the dance floor.
When she returned the table the purse was missing.
Staff later found the purse in the women’s rest room, minus $100 cash that had been pocketed by the thief.
Officers remind people it only takes a few minutes for opportunistic thieves to strike.
Break-in at high school
POLICE believe two people entered a local high school on Saturday and tripped an alarm.
Officers said the alarm was activated about 11.45pm on Saturday and security personnel went to the scene.
They saw two people near a dance studio. It is believed the individuals entered the premises through an unlocked window.
Police also attended and patrolled the area but the individuals could not be found
Window smashed in Macquarie Plaza
VANDALS have smashed a large window at a shop in Macquarie Plaza during an incident in broad daylight.
Police said the window was smashed in the small plaza off William Street about 3.10pm on Saturday.
Officers hope witnesses may have seen the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.
Police are also reviewing CCTV footage of the area in the hope of determining what happened..
Laptop, phone stolen from car
BATHURST police have repeated their warning to residents not to leave valuables unattended in their car following a theft in Keppel Street.
Officers said unknown offenders broke into a car that had been parked under a carport but left unlocked.
The thief made off with a laptop, mobile phone and a debit card.
Thefts from vehicles remain one of the most common categories of crime in the Bathurst region.
Arrested with drugs at the jail
A 57-YEAR-OLD woman has been charged with trying to take drugs into Bathurst Correctional Centre.
The woman visited the jail about 12.30pm on Sunday when staff caught her carrying the drugs.
She was found to have in her possession a crystal substance and some tabs.
