Achieving Apprentice of the Year against an impressive group of five young apprentices from across the Central West, Mr Van Uum thanked his employer Hines Constructions for the opportunities it had given him and his family for their unwavering love and support.
Most importantly, he thanked the TAFE Western Institute for encouraging and helping him achieve the qualifications that got him to where he is today.
As it was the last category of the night, the anticipation was high and there were some nerves among Mr Van Uum and his fellow nominees.
Mr Van Uum has pushed the boundaries in the past year by working full-time as a carpenter for Hines Constructions, completing not only a Certificate III in Carpentry but also a Certificate IV in Building and his first year of Project Management studies via distance from Newcastle University.
That is equivalent to three years of study and qualifications compacted into 12 months.
His biography from the TAFE Western awards panel described him as a team player with an impressive array of skills and knowledge that is always on display with the aim of helping others.
Mr Van Uum was named Student of the Year for Bathurst TAFE Campus back in May. With this latest Central West Region 2017 Apprentice of the Year Award, he is now eligible for the prestigious award of NSW 2017 Apprentice of the Year which will be announced later in the year at an awards ceremony in Sydney.
Looking to the future, Mr Van Uum hopes to finish his university degree in record time and has his eyes set on moving up the ranks in his company to a management position.
