The annual Tomato Growing Competition has been launched in Bathurst, and the person to grow the first ripe tomato of the season will be declared the winner.
Organised by Robin Price from the Bathurst East Rotary Club, the competition attracted dozens of entries last year.
“Originally it was just four of us [in the competition], it started out as a joke really,” he said.
But, last year the club opened entries to the wider community for the first time.
“Last year we received $350 from people’s entries [fees] and the Rotary club matched it dollar for dollar,” Mr Price said.
“So we gave Daffodil Cottage $700.
“I’m hoping we’ll top $1000 this year and that means 50 entries.”
Rules for the competition are simple – people can grow any variety of tomato by any method they choose, and the first one with a ripe tomato wins.
“If you think you have a ripe tomato tell another competitor, and if they agree, report it,” Mr Price said.
“If yours is the first reported you have won.”
Mr Price said last year competitors used a range of methods to try and ripen their tomatoes including planting them in a wheelbarrow so they could be in the sun during the day and wheeled inside and under cover at night.
“Others placed them next to the hot water system to keep them warm,” he said.
Entry is $5 and the prize is a $2 lottery ticket. All proceeds will go to Daffodil Cottage.
