Emergency services were called to a home in Wellington Street, Eglinton on Wednesday afternoon following reports of an assault.
A 48-year-old man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for head, abdomen and leg injuries and taken to Bathurst Hospital.
He was then flown to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition.
Police from Chifley local area command attended and launched an investigation.
A 24-year-old man was arrested by detectives at Raymond Terrace police station on Saturday.
He was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with attempt to murder.
He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.
