While Mitchell is the under 14s defending champion in the Western Zone competition, this season coach Clint Bryant has a new-look side.
It includes six Bathurst players and they were critical in Sunday’s win at Lady Cutler Park.
“There’s quite a few new faces in that side this year, they’re all quite young,” Bryant said.
“There’s a lot of Bathurst kids in that side and they got a touch up against Dubbo a couple of weeks ago, so they were quite happy to get one back.
“The Bathurst kids played well yesterday as well, they all contributed in some way.”
Macquarie won the toss and batted first, but the hosts struggled to form any meaningful partnerships. They were all out for 116 in the 43rd over.
Bathurst’s Jacob Ryan conceded just seven runs from his six overs and picked up a wicket, but the entire side impressed.
“To restrict them to 116 was a great effort from the bowlers even though we bowled 15 wides and five no-balls, we shot ourselves in the foot a little bit there,” Bryant said.
“Jim Schoeler-Jones from the Blue Mountains, he took 1-9 off seven overs which was really good. He’s well over six-foot.
“We took eight catches as well and none of those were taken by the ’keeper, it was a really good effort.”
Mitchell’s chase did not start well when opener Fergus Fergusson fell for four. More wobbles came, but Bathurst’s Hamish Siegert (23), Cooper Brien (21), Declan Fawkner (16) and Tom Lynch (26 not out) helped their side over the line. It reached the required total seven wickets down in the 30th over.
“It was very tricky, we lost Fergus early and then Hamish and Cooper from Bathurst, they put on together 47,” Bryant said.
“Then Hamish got out and we lost a few really quick, we lost a lot in the middle, but then Tom Lynch and Declan came together and put on 26 to put us in reach.
“It was always going to be a bit of a tricky total to chase.”
