It has become quite a common line, yet North was too good in the Mudgee Interclub Triathlon on Sunday morning.
He finished a comfortable four minutes and two seconds ahead of second placed Matt Webster, from Mudgee.
Played under an extended triathlon format, entrants were required to complete a two kilometre run, 250 metre swim, 18 kilometre ride, 250 metre swim and finish with a two kilometre run.
North said it was a tough start.
“I was going in a bit flat and tired from my training. I hadn’t done much, just fitness and strength,” he said.
“Matt Webster and the other young guns start really strongly but I kept with the team and I led at the end of the first run.
“I jumped into the pool and built on my lead. I lead by about 30 to 40 seconds getting out of the pool.
“I got off my my bike with a three minute lead. I finished the race with a tough run.
“It was really windy and because I’m a bit bigger and heavier, it helped my race.”
North finished the first run in 6:56, the first swim in 4:09, the ride in 26:29, the second swim in 4:05 and the second run in 7:40.
He was the quickest in every single part of the triathlon.
North said the Bathurst Wallabies Triathlon Club had its best turn-out at the Mudgee meeting, with 14 entrants competing in the main race.
“We might not be the largest clubs, in terms of members, like Orange or Mudgee but we’re defiantly a strong club,” he said.
While Orange’s Jack Bilton took third place, both Mark Windsor finished fourth and Tom Hanrahan finished seventh as three Bathurst triathletes finished in the top 10.
Windsor’s finished first in his category (50-59 years).
North will now be kept busy in the coming weeks, with even more competitions.
“There’s no rest for the wicked,” he said.
“I’ve got the Western Sydney Ironman this weekend and then the Cowra Interclub the weekend after. I’ve then got the next Bathurst meeting.”
Lauren Kerwick, from Orange, was the best performing female, finishing in a time of 58 minutes and eight seconds.
She finished 11th overall, with nine of the top 11 female competitors all from Orange.
Caroline Robertson was the best female competitor from Bathurst, finishing in a time of one hour, 11 minutes and 29 seconds and in 59th position overall.
Bathurst Wallabies Triathlon Club also showed of its new tent at the Mudgee meeting.
“It was really good to see the work [club president] James Kelly has been doing for the club,” he said.
“He’s been supporting the club with a new tent which has received a lot of good comments.”
