In fact it was Waters’ prior racing at the famous 6.213 kilometre circuit that led to him being offered a seat in a Bathurst 12 Hour entry for the first time.
Waters will form part of the Strakka Racing line-up as the British outfit makes its maiden appearance at the Bathurst 12 Hour.
The Silverstone-based team has entered two Mercedes-AMG GT3’s for the February event, with Waters to partner Strakka regulars Nick Leventis, Lewis Williamson and David Fumanelli in one of them.
“It’s great to have Cameron with us for our Mercedes-AMG debut,” Strakka racing director Jay Davenport said.
“Cameron recently secured his first Supercars victory and he is keen to share his knowledge of the mountain, a track that’s new to Strakka.
“Together with Cameron, this car has a strong and competitive line up.”
Waters, who won this year’s Sandown 500, brings the experience of six Bathurst 1000 campaigns to Strakka.
Though his best finish in the Great Race was a fourth in 2016, Waters is hopeful of a podium in his Bathurst 12 Hour debut.
“I’m really excited about doing the 2018 Bathurst 12 Hour with Strakka Racing,” Waters said.
“It is a top-level team and I think we have a genuine shot at winning it. It’s also a race that I have always wanted to do and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity.”
