The dam was a popular destination for many families, who took part in a range of activities in and out of the water.
Some took their boats out on the water to enjoy the scenery or fish, there were people riding jet skis around the dam and young children swam and splashed close to the shore.
Those not in the water enjoyed picnic lunches in the shade.
Among those at Chifley Dam was the Kennedy family, who had come from Western Sydney.
The family had secured a shady spot up on a hill, overlooking the water.
Taylor Kennedy, 17, said the day was about having fun out on the water.
“We’ve been visiting family [in Bathurst] for Christmas and our family, they’ve just bought a new boat, so we thought we’d try it out, jet skiing and tubing,” she said.
When Taylor and her siblings weren’t in the water, they watched their other family members shoot around the water from their spot on the hill.
They thought Chifley Dam was a nice spot to spend New Year’s Eve.
“It has been really good,” Taylor said.
