As a Supercars driver he has experienced the jubilation of coming from the rear of the grid to win the Bathurst 1000 and the shattering sensation of crashing at the same track and spending race day in hospital.
This year as a competitor in the Bathurst 12 Hour, the day after he celebrated snaring pole position, he was apologising to his team-mates for an incident which ended their race.
Pushing hard to improve on his fifth position with around 2½ hours of the race remaining, Mostert tried to pull off a passing move at Forrest’s Elbow.
Looking for a gap three-wide, he made contact with Kevin Estre’s Craft Bamboo Porsche.
As a flow on from that, the #17 Bentley Team M-Sport Continental being steered by Steve Kane – which had been in contention for a third podium in as many years – was badly damaged while Kean Booker’s Class B Porsche smacked into the wall on the right.
Mostert’s BMW Team Schnitzer M6 was so badly damaged its race ended after 217 laps and he was fined $2,000, of which $1,000 is suspended.
“I was really struggling to try and get past the Porsche and the Bentley there,” Mostert said.
“Our car was really mega-quick all race, but the only way past them was to take advantage of some lapped traffic.
“Yeah I had a big crack around the outside of Forrest’s Elbow and then coming off the Elbow, you know it went from a space for me to no space and I unfortunately made contact with the Bentley and the B Class Porsche and basically hurt all three of our races.
“It’s an absolute shame because to have Schnitzer Motorsport out here all the way from Germany and not finish the race, in the garage it is disappointing.
“Also my team-mates Marco [Whittmann] and Augusto [Farfus], they’ve done an amazing job all weekend.
“It’s disappointing, two years in a row I haven’t finished the race, so maybe third time lucky.”
