Trained by Brooke Wilkins and driven by Jason Grimson, eight-year-old gelding Ima Jaymar ($5.20) timed his run to perfection to claim a seventh career win.
Ima Jaymar got away quickest when the arms folded back but Im With Lexy came across from the outside to lead the way.
Puffnstuff also started with plenty of pace but wasn’t going to get around Bernie Hewitt’s leader, settling in the death seat.
Hewitt’s other favoured runner in the race, Hez All Courage ($4.30), broke during score up and was never able to rejoin the field.
Receiving the bell, Ima Jaymar continued to sit behind Im With Lexy and Special Thoughts was second in the outside line.
At the turn for home Special Thoughts couldn’t increase the tempo when the field shifted into the next gear.
As she dropped back it created a small four-horse break at the front of the field consisting of Im With Lexy, Ima Jaymar, Puffnstuff and another Hewitt horse Gunna Cullect.
Inside the final 200m Im With Lexy and Ima Jaymar bounded away from their challengers to make it a race of two.
Ima Jaymar got a nose in front of Im With Lexy with less than 100m to race and Hewitt’s mare couldn’t respond.
The winning mile rate was 1:54.8 and the margin was 2.7m.
A further 10m back Double Standards ($55.50, Kasey Hocking) was a surprise third place finisher just ahead of In The Extreme.
Hewitt got his revenge in the final race of the evening by locking out the top two placings.
