Two large bunya pines, believed to have been planted in 1890, have started dropping seeds and each one can weigh up to 10 kilograms.
So hefty are these giant seeds, that Bathurst Regional Council has now fenced off large areas around each tree to prevent public access underneath the canopy.
This is an annual occurrence, with seeds dropping from February until April.
The Permaculture Research Institute’s website states that bunya pines are native to south-east Queensland.
“Although its timber has been discovered to be ideal for use in the production of acoustic musical instruments, its real potential comes in its already ancient role (and bright future) as a human food source,” the site states.
