Roads and Maritime Services has confirmed there is a “traffic issue” with the lights at the intersection, but four weeks on the issue remains unresolved.
Councillor Warren Aubin said he has received complaints from plenty of people who are queuing up on the highway, even though there is no cross traffic on George Street.
He raised the issue at council’s policy meeting on Wednesday night saying the George and Durham street lights were ‘in total disarray.’
“The highway becomes a standstill; the highway has been banked up from George Street down, and across William Street of an afternoon, of a morning. It is woeful.”
“I've rung three times to the 131 700 number and got the same thing three times. The first complaint I made was February 12 and and they have now said that Telstra was contacted to come and fix it.
“They've got a break in communication between themselves and the traffic lights; they can't fix the phasing. I sat there for a minute 47 the other day at a red light, which is just way too long on a highway.”
Cr Ian North said he too has experienced problems there.
“I go to work a bit after four in the morning and I have sat there for a minute and a half to two minutes and there is no traffic and I can't go.
“Even in the morning when there's no traffic you're sitting there.
“I haven't rung that number but I have spoken to the director [of Engineering] about it” he said.
Cr Aubin said the situation was not good enough.
"It's disgraceful to the people of Bathurst and to the motoring public coming into Bathurst.
“That's a really busy intersection.”
"We've been told Telstra is fixing the problem but it's been like that since February.
"It's unacceptable."
A spokesperson for the Roads and Maritime Services said it is aware of a traffic issue with the George Street intersection with Durham Street in Bathurst and has been working with Telstra, DM Roads and Bathurst Regional Council to resolve the issue since it was reported on February 12.
“Roads and Maritime will continue working with all stakeholders to improve the efficiency of the intersection and thanks the community for its patience while this issue is being resolved.”
