After finishing last, the Blues announced on Tuesday that they were parting ways with Keeping by mutual agreement.

After finishing fourth in the inaugural women's season under Keeping, the Blues recruited heavily and started this season as one of the premiership favourites.

While they won the season opener against arch rivals Collingwood, the match became exhibit A in a fierce debate about game style in the women's league.

Keeping also fell ill after round one and was hospitalised, not returning until their fourth game.

He said in a club statement that it had been an honour and privilege to coach the Blues in the AFLW.

"I will always be grateful to Carlton for the opportunity," he said.

Blues football boss Andrew McKay said Keeping had played a crucial role in the establishment of their women's team.

"We are thankful for his clear investment and passion for the playing group and the program more broadly," McKay said.

"Damien has decided the time is right to explore opportunities elsewhere and we wish him and his family well for their future endeavours."
