The 22-year-old man from West Bathurst will front court on May 7 charged with high range PCA after being arrested by police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Chief Inspector Phil Brooks from the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said police were called to View Street in Kelso after reports a red Subaru was being driven erratically.
“Police received numerous triple 000 calls regarding his manner of driving,” Chief Inspector Brooks said.
“Officers stopped the vehicle in View Street and the driver, a 22-year-old male, was subjected to a roadside breath test, which recorded a positive result.
“He was taken back to Bathurst police station for a breath analysis, recording a reading of 0.233.”
Chief Inspector Brooks said police would allege the driver had been drinking beer and other alcohol ofor several hours before his arrest. His licence was suspended on the spot.
While the man’s arrest came two hours after the high profile Easter long weekend police Operation Tortoise had ended, police said it highlighted the fact too many people were putting themselves and other road users in danger.
“Despite an increased police presence on the roads and double-demerit enforcement, too many people still made poor decisions,” Traffic and Highway Patrol commander Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said.
“While we were generally pleased with driver behaviour, the fact that 7750 drivers chose to speed and nearly 300 drivers were caught drink-driving shows that there are still too many putting themselves and others at risk.”
