Back in 1963, at just 21 years old, Ms Farrell said there were not a lot of options for women at the time.
“I joined because in those days you either go to a bank, be a nurse or work in Coles or Woolies,” she said.
“I started out as a driver [in the Army] and I ended up changing to clerical.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was fantastic. It was the best thing for kids in those days.”
Friend and former Army woman June Paton was also in the Army but served her time as a cook.
“I did two years, from 1964 to 1966, and it was a lot of fun,” she said.
The duo were among the hundreds of people who took part in the Anzac Day march from the Bathurst RSL Sub Branch to the War Memorial Carillon for the Commemoration Service.
