The community’s old cement works, now known as The Foundations, are in the midst of being painted by world-renowned artist Guido Van Helten.
And the project has already had a a major impact on the village, with more than 700 people visiting the site in one weekend alone.
“These are the biggest works that he has ever done,” Lithgow councillor Maree Statham said of Van Helten.
“You will be able to see all the pictures 360 degrees around them, when normally his artworks are more one-sided.”
Cr Statham said she had met people from all over NSW who had come to the village to visit the silos.
“I’ve met people from Leura, Gulgong, Parkes and Wollongong. They are coming from all over the state, which is just wonderful for Portland,” she said.
Councillor Cass Coleman said the project will provide a lasting legacy for the families of the men painted on the silos.
