SOMETIMES it’s an easy decision: your child will go to the school that is closest to your home, or where their older siblings attend.
But sometimes it can be hard to know which school will bring out the best in your child. Here are a few topics to think about and perhaps discuss with your child.
- Are there any specific areas your child is interested in, and does the school have the resources and facilities to encourage that interest, including extra-curricular activities?
- Does the school have a reputation for achievement in any particular area, and does that match your child’s abilities?
- Is the school able to meet your child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs? What programs do they have in place to ensure this?
- How important is it to you that your child knows other children at the school?
- If you have an older child at the same school, what are the pros and cons of them both attending the same school?
- What options are there to travel to and from school?
- What is covered by the fees, and are there scholarships available?
- What is the school’s policy on homework and discipline, and do you agree with it?
A good place to start is asking other people who have children attending the school, or read through the school’s website. Then go to the school’s open day or make an appointment to have a tour of the school.
