Kamin Gock was one of eight student finalists who attended a news workshop at the Southern Cross Austereo rooftop in Sydney last week. They were set a number of challenging tasks to be completed in a short time frame.
The students were judged across a number of areas including a general knowledge questionnaire, recording a live cross to a breaking story, and selecting AM and FM appropriate news stories.
Australian Radio Network national news director Deborah Clay said Mr Gock stood out as a “journalist with outstanding potential for radio news” from a field of high calibre applicants.
“This is a truly amazing opportunity, I’m so thankful and can’t wait to make the most of the scholarship,” Mr Gock said.
“My long-term goal is to become a well-rounded, credible journalist who makes a positive difference in the industry through objective and investigative reporting.”
Mr Gock will now start an eight-week paid work attachment in Sydney, consisting of two weeks each at Macquarie Media, Southern Cross Austereo, Australian Radio Network, and Nova Entertainment.
Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer Joan Warner said the scholarship gave aspiring journalists the chance to learn from senior radio journalists.
Head of the CSU School of Communication and Creative Industries Dr Sue Wood congratulated Mr Gock.
“Charles Sturt University’s Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) is at the cutting edge of 21st century journalism while remaining the most professionally focused journalism course in Australia,” Dr Wood said.
“With more than 40 years of experience in educating journalists for news environments around the world, you can be confident you are learning from the best in the business with Charles Sturt University.”
