Social Bowls
Outside temperatures and weather conditions generally may be a challenge now but the stalwarts at Majellan continue to enjoy the Tuesday afternoon social bowls competition with three rinks in action this week.
Rink winners were Tiger Smith and Ron McGarry with a 28-17 win over Allan Clark and one of our newest young bowlers, Trevor Sharpen, who is certainly holding his own against much more experienced competition.
The Clark team collected first points but the Smith team responded strongly and led 8-1 after five ends and were never headed from there on.
The Clark team reached double figures in the 16th end and finished with a four, but the Smith team simply overpowered their opponents.
Peter Naylor, John Bosson and John Banning collected a 28-20 win over Tony McNamara, Terry Clark and Ian Warren, opening their ledger with a six-end run for 16 points, which included a seven pointer in the fourth, to leave the McNamara team reeling.
The McNamara team opened their account with a four and one to begin a rebuild process from the seventh but unfortunately, they ran out of steam quickly.
The Naylor team pushed on to blow their lead out to 19-5 by the tenth end and it looked all done.
A mini revival from the 14th saw the McNamara team collect two fours and a two to have them back to 25-17 down, but the Naylor team kept the pressure on with a two and one to stretch their lead out again and the McNamara team could only match them to go down by eight.
Noel Witney, Jim Clark and Bruce Parr scored a 30-18 win over Tony Hogan, Ian Dewes and Ray Minogue but the early ends were a much closer affair.
The Witney team jumped first and were leading 12-3 after the eighth end when the Hogan team came back with a four, three and two to tie the match at 12 all after the 11th and it was 14 all after the 13th end.
But from here the Witney team took control with a three and then a run which included a five in the 18th end to sit 27-15 after the 19th end.
A three in the final end for the Witney team was the icing on the cake.
The Saturday afternoon Social Competition again saw three rinks in play with Ken Hartwig and Jim Clark collecting the rink prize with a 27-11 win over Ted Parker and Terry Clark.
Jumping from the blocks with a four, the Hartwig team set the pace reaching double figures in the seventh end and scoring in 13 ends to the Parker teams seven to dominate the card.
The Parker team reached double figures in the 18th end but the Hartwig team were 26 by then and it was all over.
Tim Pickstone and Trevor Sharpen recorded a 30-10 win over Tony Press and John Bosson with the Pickstone team scoring on all but five ends.
Thy led 17-2 after the tenth end and 30-8 after the 20th with the Press team making double figures on the last end.
Allan Clark, Ted Crouch and John Banning scored an 18-16 win over Noel Witney, Robert McClean and Hugh Brenan, but it was close from the start.
The Clark team two jumped with two and two and held onto their lead right through the match despite the Witney team being at their heels all the way.
The Clark team were 5-4 in front after the sixth end, they were in front 12-11 after the 14th and 17-16 after the 20th end, so it could have gone either way.
But it was the Clark team who held their nerve and won the last to seal a great win.
Once again, the Saturday jackpot prize failed to go off so it climbs well above $650 for next week.
Plenty of incentive for new and old players to get to Majellan for the Saturday Competition.
Majellan Bowling Club and Bathurst Light Car Club members gathered together at Majellan this week to learn how to operate the defibrillator that each Club has just acquired, thanks to separate grants for each Club from the NSW Government.
While the unit is relatively simple to operate and not expected to be used by either Club, having the capacity to potentially save a life was certainly foremost in the minds of all attending the demonstration provided by the Red Cross.
Members are advised that the draw for the Major/Minor Pairs, Mixed Pairs and Fours are now on the notice board for your attention.
Players are asked to check the play by dates for all these championship matches to avoid disappointment.
Membership fees are due by the end of June for both male and female members and you are encouraged to not leave payment until the last minute.
Simply make payment over the bar and your new card will be presented to you after the transaction.
The final meeting of the Western Districts Bowling Association will be held in Orange on Saturday marking a new era in representation in our region.
All District organisations are closing to simplify the representative structure and reconfigured Zone 4 will shortly be announcing its new constitution and details of the AGM of the Zone.
Majellan Club continues to receive bookings to use the Club for events such as family celebrations, anniversaries, engagements and other events.
Members are encouraged to support their Club by volunteering to help manage these activities and keep the wheels turning.
If you are not a current participant in any of the Club’s volunteer teams, please ask how you can contribute to help make our Club become a better place for everyone.
2019 Membership dues can now be renewed at the bar! All current memberships expire at the end of June. New memberships are always welcome.
That’s it for another busy week readers so until next time, think on what W.H. Auden said, “We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don’t know.”

On a chilly morning, our ten Juniors came to play last Saturday morning.
Bryce Gunning, Karli Butler, and Faith Gronowicz played against Fletcher Ryan, Lucas Gronowicz and Guy Lore in a game of Triples.
After six ends, Bryce’s team won. The other Pairs game was played between Tom Rodenhuis and Kane Cutler against Brodie Carter and Clara Bromfield.
Tom and Kane won 9-6 after being down 4-nil.
John Archer is representing the club at the Australian Open in Broadbeach.
He was eliminated from the Over 60’s Fours but made it through to the round of 128 in the Singles.
He was with John Perry in the Over 60’s Pairs. Unfortunately, that’s where John’s run ended.
Social Bowls
With the cooler, showery conditions, numbers have been down.
Wednesday, June 13
Game 1, Rink 9. Ray Noonan, Neil Mitai and Kevin Miller versus Ross James, Ian Cunningham and Tony Hopkins. Ray and his team streaked away by winning the first seven ends and 11 shots.
Ross and his crew then won two ends and three shots but this was met by Ray’s team adding a further four shots to bring the score to 15-3 in the 12th end.
A single each was then followed by the next four ends being won by Ross’s team, adding another six shots to their score. Shorty, Neil and Kevin delivered the coup de grace to take the score to 23-10.
Ross, Ian and Tony came back, too late in the last end with a five. Ends 13-8.
Game 2, Rink 10. Mr Jack Smith, Barry McPherson and Hamish McKay versus Trevor Kellock, Jeff Larsen and John Martin.
Jack, Barry and Hamish started well, having nine shots on the board after the first four ends.
Jack’s team had a single to bring them up to 12, but Trevor’s team took the next three ends and five shots to be only one shot down at 12-11 in the 11th end.
Three successive singles from Mr Smith and crew put them further in front, and never headed after that.
Winning five of the next seven ends added another nine shots so the final score was 24-15. Ends 13-8.
Game 3, Rink 11. Norm Hayes and Bob Heffernan versus Arthur Williams and Phil Murray.
Norm and Heffo started with the first two ends but by the eighth end, they were only one shot ahead of Arthur and Phil, 8-7.
From there, Norm and Heffo scored well in the 11th end so that by the 15th end, they led 22-9.
Arthur and Phil took four of the remaining five ends, but fell well short with the final score 25-14. Ends ten all.
Friday, June 15
Six brave members turned out on a wintery, showery afternoon.
In fact the showers persisted so that they called the game off after seven ends.
Ray Noonan, Jim Grives and Ian Cunningham played Norm Hayes, Pat Duff and John Martin. Norm’s team drew first blood with a single but this was met by Ray’s team.
A second single from Norm’s team was their last addition to the board.
Ray, Jim and Ian put on another eight shots to be leading 9-2 when rain stopped play.
Saturday, June 16
It was still pretty cold, but no rain to deter the players (although some squibbed it).
Game 1, Rink 8. Bob Lindsay and Gary Hotham versus Geoff Thorne and Bruce Rich. Having won three of the first ends, Geoff and Bruce had a single shot lead 5-4.
Gary and Bob put on a strong burst, scoring nine shots in the next six ends, thus leading 13-5.
After that, play went either way, with the margin gradually whittled back to five at the 18th end with the score 16-11.
Bob and Gary were matched by Geoff and Bruce in the last two ends, but the win went to Bob and Gary 21-16. Ends 11-10 to Bob and Gary.
Game 2, Rink 9. Ross James and Paul Reece versus Mick Hall and Denis Harvey.
Mick and Dennis had the first end and two shots but the next five ends and eight shots went to Ross and Paul.
Mick and Dennis brought them level on nine all. Ross and Paul was matched by their opponents who then followed that up with a single to take the lead.
The next five ends and 14 shots went to Ross and Paul.
Two shots either side in the last two ends saw the game end at the 20th end on 31-17. Ends 13-7.
Game 3, Rink 10. Ray Noonan and Paul Rodenhuis versus Norm Hayes and Arthur Williams.
Ray and Paul started and answered by Norm and Arthur. A single each had the score 4-3 to Norm and Arthur.
Ray and Paul then powered ahead, winning ten of the next 13 ends, adding 19 shots to the board.
Norm and Arthur put them into double figures with the final score after 19 ends 24-10. Ends 13-6
Game 4, Rink 11. Ian Schofield and John Fulton versus Mick Sewell and Phil Murray. Ian and John
held the lead early, but Mick and Phil plugged away to draw level at ten all in the 12th end.
A burst put Ian and John in a good position, but Mick and Phil rallied, taking the next five ends and 11 shots to lead by one in the 20th end.
Anyone’s game in the last end, and it was Ian and John that took the game with two shots.
The final score, 22-21, ends 12-9 to Mick and Phil.
