Against a field of just three other runners Boom Down surged to the lead midway through the stayer’s event and kept adding to his margin to score a dominant 14 metre win.
Winning trainer Stephen Cleary, of Mandurama, holds a high opinion of his lightly raced runner.
“When I got him I knew he was going to be a stayer. His breeding suggested that,” he said.
“It’s just a matter of finding a race for him because there’s no races for the younger, maiden dogs.
“He’s a good dog. Probably the best dog I’ve had for a long time.”
Inside starter Balcatta ($5.80) was the best away at the green light, opening up an early two length lead on Dana Kadi ($2.80).
Boom Down and favourite Scotmen Two ($2.40) were on Dana Kadi’s tail coming out of the turn.
In a surprising moment Scotmen Two lost touch with the other three runners and went amiss going past the winning post for the first time.
Across the back of the track Balcatta was fading fast and Boom Down easily passed the leader with more than 200m still to run.
Dana Kadi also wormed her way past Balcatta as she approached the bend but by that time Boom Down was already 10m clear.
The winning time was 36.41 seconds.
It was the first career win for Boom Down in his third start.
