More than 200 people are already booked to come to Bathurst for the Spyderfest Veterans Salute from September 7-9, with a lap of the Mount high on the agenda for the most of them.

They will be riding more than 150 Spyders, “reverse” motorised tricycles with two wheels at the front and one at the back that have been growing in popularity since being introduced in Australia in 2008.

Spyder enthusiasts Mike Hatton and Catrina Waterson, who run the spydermates.com website, are co-ordinating the Bathurst meeting.

Mr Hatton said it was the perfect spot for a get-together.

“We searched for a venue for a long time and Rydges Mount Panorama had everything we wanted,” he said.

“There’s the track right there that people can ride around, even if it’s at 60km/h, and Bathurst is just a great place to visit.”

Mr Hatton said he bought his first Spyder in 2013 and was immediately hooked.

He said while many owners had previously ridden motorcycles, others who had not ridden bikes were attracted to the added stability that came with three wheels.

He said there was also a good community feel among Spyder riders, with most aged mid-40s and above.

And around 21 per cent of all Australian Spyder owners were women, the highest percentage in the world.

“It’s a bit of a niche product in Australia and the community connection is quite strong,” Mr Hatton said.

A highlight of the Bathurst trip will be a dinner on the Sunday night while eight local destinations have been selected for road trips across the three days.

Riders will collect “auction dollars” at each destination that they can use to bid for prizes at Sunday’s dinner.

Bathurst Regional Council has agreed to close Russell Street from 1pm-3pm on the Sunday for a show and shine.
