Our claim to Chiko ownership is that the tasty treat is made here; Bendigo’s claim is that boilermaker Francis McEnroe invented them there; while Wagga Wagga claims ownership as the first Chiko rolls were sold at that city’s show in 1951.
So what can we do to finally, and conclusively, stake our claim? This might be the answer.
Tourism booking platform Wotif is hunting for somewhere to build a new attraction to join Australian icons such as the Big Banana and Big Merino.
Any person, animal or object and location can be nominated online until September 25.
The public then has two weeks to vote from a list of finalists and the winner will be built by the end of the year.
And Parade’s suggestion is this: The Big Chiko at the Sydney entrance to Bathurst. And all we need is for the community and council to get on board.
Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said the competition was celebrating the company’s 18th anniversary by giving back to the destinations, tourism providers and travellers that have helped it evolve.
“What better way to do this than by giving Australia something synonymous with the tourism landscape, and which all Aussies love: the next big thing?” he said.
