INDIGENOUS students celebrated the beginning of NAIDOC Week in the city, joining a march up William Street to Bathurst Memorial and Entertainment Centre for a morning of cultural celebrations.

This year, NAIDOC Week comes under the theme ‘Because of Her, We Can’ highlighting the active and significant roles Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman have played in our society.
NAIDOC Week is held nationally from July 8 until July 15, but as that date falls in the school holidays schools across the state celebrate the week at a later date.
Des Crawford, an Indigenous educator and organiser of Monday’s events said this week was about honouring Indigenous women and the role they have played, and continue to play, in the lives of Indigenous people.
Rhys Harvey, Indigenous educator at Bathurst High School said the week ensured the students were involved in cultural activities.
Principal of Bathurst High School, Ken Barwick said the week highlighted the achievements of Indigenous students and said this year Bathurst High was expecting very strong ATAR results from a number of Indigenous students.
“Isaac Nicholls, Maddy Masters and Courtney Charlton are all expected to do very well this year,” he said.
