It was a historical day Sunday, at the twelfth round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship – the Rabble.club Sandown 500, which saw Triple Eighth securing a podium lockout with all three of their cars and drivers on the rostrum.
Reigning Supercars champion Jamie Whincup and his co-driver Paul Dumbrell lead home fellow Red Bull Holden Racing Team’s Shane van Gisbergen and his fellow countryman, Kiwi’s Earl Bamber, who made his Supercars debut.
With van Gisbergen scoring 276 points for the round and his nearest rival, Scott McLaughlin (Shell V-Power Racing Team) scoring 240, it sees van Gisbergen increasing his championship lead from 19 to 55 with another four rounds to go.
Rounding out the podium was Autobarn Lowndes Racing’s Craig Lowndes, in his last season of full time racing and Steve Richards.
“I couldn’t be happier as the car has been awesome all weekend,” said Whincup via Supercars TV.
“PD (Paul Dumbrell) did a fantastic job, but it’s not over till it’s over. We just kept our heads down and concentrating,” explained the seven times Supercars champion.
Completing the top five was McLaughlin and Frenchman’s Alex Prémat, with Erebus Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds and Luke Youlden in fifth place respectfully.
Next up… The Great Race – Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 from October 4-7.
