A country speedway which attracts competitors from all over New South Wales, Cullen Bullen is a 385 metres track.
The Portland District Motor Sports Club is excited to announce that through the NSW Government Stronger Country Communities Fund, $10,061 has been granted to the Cullen Bullen Sportsground Trust to upgrade the electricity supply to the grandstand and canteen.
Club secretary Sue Healey then literally jumped for joy when Bathurst MP Paul Toole announced the club was also successful in receiving a further grant of $57,300.
The money, to fund the second stage of upgrades at the track, will allow for the replacement of an Armco section of the pit wall at the second turn with concrete.
It will also relocate the existing track entry/exit points to improve safety.
Mr Toole said the upgraded venue will attract increased participation from competitors and parents of junior competitors.
“As a result, more competitors will deliver better racing and improve the entertainment value of the raceway for local and visiting spectators. This is also expected to lead to an increase in spectator numbers at race meetings,” he said.
The Cullen Bullen Raceway opened in 1991 after Portland District Motor Sports Club members transformed the rarely used Cullen Bullen Sportsground into a granite surface based speedway.
Over the years many improvements have been undertaken, including the erection of a high safety catch fence, upgraded lighting, new canteen and toilet facilities in the pit area and just recently, a pit exit safety gate.
The new racing season at the Kings Auto Parts Cullen Bullen Raceway is all set to start this Saturday.
It will feature a wide range of categories from the juniors, four cylinders, street stockers and limited sedans right through to the open wheeler microsprints and a rare demonstration by the vintage speedcars and modifieds.
The 36-event program commences at 4pm and continues until around 9.30pm.
