Strawberry contamination: #SmashaStrawb lights up social media to support farmers | Photos, recipes
AS the strawberry contamination scare continues, people have taken to social media to share strawberry recipes and it has prompted a trending hashtag, #SmashaStrawb.
Needles have been found in strawberries right across the country and tonnes of the fruit has been discarded or pulled off shelves at supermarkets.
Video of tonnes of strawberries being dumped due to the contamination scare has prompted many people to come out in support of farmers and continue buying the fruit.
Social media has since lit up with people sharing their favourite strawberry recipes – from cakes to cocktails, salads and of course strawberries in champagne.
Fairfax Media reader Kim Schraner posted online and said the contamination scare has not turned her off eating strawberries.
“Yes still eating them and slicing them as usual,” she wrote.
A cartoon sketch telling people: “Cut ‘em up, don’t cut ‘em out” has also gone viral on social media.
Meanwhile, agriculture Minister David Littleproud says the “parasites” responsible for spiking strawberries should “swing for this” and do hard time.
The government is rushing legislation through parliament to ratchet up the maximum penalties for so-called “food terrorists” from 10 to 15 years behind bars.
