Held in Hobart from September 3 to 14, Sue McMahon and Jackie Cousins went undefeated in division 13 mixed, with fellow Central Coast teammate Faye Cartlidge, while Dave Fuller won the men’s division one, alongside Peter Bastow and John Bonello.
It was McMahon’s and Cousins third and fifth time competing in masters respectively, while Fuller racked up his 22nd appearance at the tournament.
In the words of Split Enz, history never repeats, but it did for Fuller, with almost identical scores in 2018 to when he won division one eight years ago.
“Eight years ago, we won the same division at the same place [in Hobart],” he said.
“We went that one undefeated, like we did this time, and the scores were very similar.
“Eight years ago, our number three went on lost in three, I went on and won in five and our number one won in three.
“This time I went on first. I was down 2-nil but won in five, our number two went one and lost in three and our number three went on and won in three.”
Fuller’s NSW side managed to finish seven points clear of Northern Territory on the overall table, with ACT in third and Queensland in fourth.
McMahon said she loves the experience of playing for her state at a national level.
“The competition is really good and you get to meet new people every time you play,” she said.
“We were very lucky to win. We were seeded fourth, before knocking out the number one seed Northern Territory.
“It came down to me to win. I was down by two and I went on to win in five.
“In the final round, we were eight points ahead of Northern Territory. We went on to beat Queensland in the final round to win.”
Cousins said she’s enjoyed the social aspects of the tournament.
“I’ve been a runner-up before, always the bridesmaid,” she said.
“I really enjoying the social side of it.”
McMahon’s and Cousins’ NSW side finished first, three points ahead of Northern Territory, with Western Australia in third and ACT in fourth.
As well, talented squash players form all across NSW are set to descend on the Central West for the Bathurst Panthers Squash Open from October 20 to 21.
Fuller said numbers for the open are looking good.
“We had some strong players enter,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to it and we’re hoping for some good local support in the community.”
