Given he has won the Great Race four times and is about to make his 17th start in the 161-lap epic, he knows all about the challenges as well.
While there have certainly been drivers who are physically exhausted after their stints, Whincup’s co-driver Paul Dumbrell amongst them, staying switched on lap after lap is draining as well.
“Physically it’s not too bad. We go to some hot, gruelling tracks in the rest of the circuit, but mentally, to be mentally switched on for six and a half hours, that’s a long ole grind,” Whincup said.
“By far it’s the most mentally toughest race we do.
“It’s an early start, we’re all up at 5.30am, and it finishes at six, so that’s more than 12 hours of concentration which is a long haul … it’s a battle of the fittest.”
