Organisers say this year’s Great Race could attract a record crowd with more than 6000 camp sites booked around Mount Panorama and more than 33,000 people calling the campgrounds home for the week.
NSW Police will commence Operation Hoist on Thursday, October 4 and will continue until Sunday, October 7 to ensure the safety and security of competitors, officials and thousands of spectators throughout the event.
General Duties police attached to Chifley Police Area Command and across Western Region will be assisted by specialist officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Dog Unit, PolAir, Licensing Police, Bicycle Unit, Youth Command, Police Transport Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command throughout the operation.
In an alert to the public, Chifley Police District officers have advised the following tips:
- If you are out and about do not leave property unattended, such as handbags, wallets and mobile phones, especially in licensed venues and public spaces
- Do not carry large amounts of cash with you
- Consider having your local police station number programmed into your phone, Bathurst 6332 8699
Officers have advised that car parks with a parking attendant or are supervised/patrolled are preferred, otherwise try to park in locations that are well lit and/or well populated.
In addition:
- Tell people where you are going and what time you will return
- Use alcohol in moderation
- Stick to major routes and roads and don't take shortcuts
- Use footpaths that are well lit
- Stay in groups and look out for your mates.
Officers have advised that crimes should not be reported via NSW Police social media pages, and instead to contact your local police stations or call Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
