BATHURST’S Mary Thistleton has capped off a special year on the golf course after being awarded the Mabel McKenzie Brooch.

Thistleton, 96, took out the inaugural Super Vets Championship in April at the Bathurst Golf Club and it was that performance which helped her claim the coveted brooch.
Her nett total of 66 from the tournament was recognised as the best score by Veteran Women Golfers Association.
Mabel MacKenzie was the first country-based vice-president of the Veteran Women Golfers Association in 1949.
At the time Mackenzie was a member at Leura but had been playing in the Western Districts since 1900. She would go on to help form the Western District Association where she would be president fort 25 years.

The brooch has been named in her honour since her death in 1974.
Thistleton gets to hold onto the original brooch for three months.
“It was a great moment for the club and a real honour for our oldest player to receive the award,” Bathurst women’s captain Jane Mitchell said.
“It was a lovely moment because Mary’s family were able to attend the presentation. When her name was called out there was massive applause through the whole club.”
