An incredible number of books – 24,000 to be exact – have been sorted into every category imaginable ahead of the fair.

Lifeline Central West executive director Alex Ferguson said the organisations holds two book fairs a year, in autumn and spring, and the books on offer are only ever of the highest quality.

Volunteers have met every Tuesday in recent weeks to sort the thousands of books into their categories.

“It is all volunteer-sorted, and on Saturday and Sunday at the book fair we will have all volunteers there,” Mr Ferguson said.

Books by many different authors, including very well-known ones, can be found at the fair and in some cases their whole body of work is available.

Sometimes hard cover and paperback versions of the same book are available, offering more choice for customers. 

Mr Ferguson said people love to stock up on books, often filling up boxes and baskets with different titles. 

“It is really good to see. I think a lot of people are buying their winter reads and their summer reads in line with our Lifeline book fairs,” he said. 

The books on offer are always very affordable, with most priced between 50 cents and $6.

“You might find a fantastic coffee table book in mint condition for maybe $10,” Mr Ferguson said. 

The Lifeline Book Fair has been part of the community for around a decade.

Each year approximately 14,000 books are sold, providing a financial boost to help run important Lifeline services. 

“We run those two [book fairs] a year and they are a major source of funds to keep our Lifeline telephone service operating,” Mr Ferguson said.

The Lifeline Book Fair will be open to the public between 8.30am and 4pm on Saturday in the showground’s main pavilion.

On Sunday, books can be purchased between 10am and 2pm.

Entry to the fair is a gold coin donation, which will be added to the money from book sales and go to Lifeline.
