Bathurst Health Service will soon offer a new birthing opportunity as a part of Bathurst Maternity Unit, where one midwife can provide continuous care to a family throughout pregnancy, during labour and after the birth of a baby.
Bathurst Health Service General Manager, Cathy Marshall, said families can expect a better birth experience as a result of the program.
“This will allow mothers to get to know your midwife, who has been allocated to you,” she said.
“This will provide a better birth experience for you and your family.
“It now doesn’t end there, we will be able to offer pregnancy and post birth care that can be provided in your home and you will have the opportunity of going home from hospital as early as 4 hours after the birth.”
Project officer for the Bathurst Midwifery Group Practice, and a clinical midwifery specialist, Melissa Grabham, said there will be four midwives providing the service.
They are Meg Hitchick, Bree Murphy, Susannah Robinson and herself.
“This new service will allow you to get to know each of us during your pregnancy,” she said.
“Throughout the ages midwives have been providing this type of care for women and their families to provide a positive and empowering birthing experience and transition into parenthood.”
The Bathurst Midwifery Group Practice will start working with expectant mothers from November 18.
