Social Bowls
The Majellan Melbourne Cup Gala Day replaced the regular Tuesday afternoon Social Bowls Competition this week with the usual barbeque and sweeps with a great mixed social bowls.
The Saturday Afternoon Social Competition attracted five rinks of bowlers playing in warm Spring weather with Tony Urza, Frank Farrell in top form and Kerry Connors taking the game and rink win 34-13 over John Hobson, Terry Clark and Paul Kennedy.
The Urza team opened the scoring with a one and two, but a four off the blocks for the Hobson team was a great start.
Unfortunately for the Hobson team, the Urza team brought their A game to the green with Frank Farrell leading the way.
They scored a five-end run for 11 points to sit 14-4 ahead after the eighth end with the Hobson team responding with a five and one to reach double figures in the 10th end.
Another burst for the Urza team over six ends had them 24-10 in front after the 16th end with the Hobson team managing just two in reply.
A three-end run for 10 points with a three, five and two for the Urza team put the match beyond salvage for the Hobson team who scored a one to finish the ordeal.
Pinta Urza, Roger Cooper and Ken Hartwig scored an impressive 23-17 win over Craig Bush, Trevor Sharpen and Hugh Brennan, after the Bush team bolted off the blocks to lead 8-0 after the fourth end.
A four in the sixth end pushed the Bush team out to 12-1 after the sixth end and they looked in complete control but a four from the Urza team in the seventh end was a sign of what was to come.
By the end of the 10th end, the Bush team had double the Urza team score at 14-7, but they would score on just two more ends as the Urza team came to life with a seven-end run for 14 points and a 21-14 lead after the 17th end.
A two in the 19th put the icing on the cake for an upset win.
Ian Schofields and Ray Minogue scored a close call 19-16 win over Allan Clark and Terry James after bursting from the blocks with a four, one and two to lead 7-0 after just three ends.
The Clark team opened their account in the fourth end and maintained the mat until the 10th where they led 10-7 over the Schofields team.
It was neck and neck until the 17th end when scores were even at 15-15 and it was the Schofields team who came home the stronger with a four-end run for eight points to win by three at the post.
Noel Witney and Kevin Howard collected a 21-13 win over Tim Pickstone and John Bosson in a from the front performance leading 7-0 after the fifth end.
The Pickstone team came back with two ones, but the Witney team countered with a three. One end later they scored a two, one and two to lead 15-5 after the 12th end.
The Pickstone team tried to recover with a three in the 13th end and then one, but the Witney team kept chipping away with ones and two and held the Pickstone team out to record an eight-point margin win.
Mick McDonald, Gus Thurgood and Allan North fought hard to record a 19-13 win over Tony Hogan, Bill Paton and Ron McGarry, after the Hogan team dominated the early ends of the match leading 5-2 after the fourth end.
By the close of the ninth end the scores were tied at 7-7, but a run of seven ends for 10 points put the McDonald team well ahead at 17-8 after the 17th end.
With another two in the 19th end, the McDonald team held on for the win against the hard finishing Hogan team who scored a one and three to end their game behind by six.
2018 Club Championships
The last of the semi-finals of the 2018 Mixed Fours Championships was played this week with Tiger Smith, Leonie McGarry, Marlene Naylor and Ron Mc Garry scoring an 18-7 win in the 20th end against Liz Bull, Sue Williams, Mick Simmons and Tony Hogan.
The Smith team came off the blocks in a rush with four end wins to get their game underway and they were 5-0 after four ends.
The Bull team struggled to get their rhythm and trailed throughout the match scoring on just seven ends while the Smith team ran away with the match with scores on 12 ends.
The final round of this last competition for 2018 will be played in coming weeks.
Office bearers for the 2018/19 year were determined at the first Board Meeting of the new year this week with Tiger Smith appointed the new President of the Club.
Bob Lundie-Jenkins was elected Vice President and Athol Flanagan takes on the Secretary/Treasurer roll for what will be his 30th year in the job.
The Board are already into business with a focus on completing the current renovations on the Brian McIntosh Green, line marking the carpark and moving to implement the naming of number one green the Flanagan Green.
Participant numbers are increasing for the final round of the Majellan/Wallerawang Challenge, scheduled to be held at Wallerawang on the 25th November, however, teams are not fully nominated at this stage.
Majellan has been successful in the past two encounters and it would be great to make it a treble if possible. Our newly appointed Selectors will determine the teams for the event in the next couple of weeks.
The Zone 4 Pennant Forum will be held at the Yeoval Bowling Club on Saturday December 15, by which time the names of all potential players will need to be provided to the Zone Match Committee.
Majellan has indicated that a team will be nominated for the Five and Seven series for the 2019 Pennant season and the final details of how that will impact on players will be determined at the Yeoval Forum.
That’s it for another week at Majellan readers, so until next time, something to inspire your thinking from Wayne Dyer, “If you believe it will work out, you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t, you will see obstacles”

Ross James continues to do a great job nurturing the Junior Bowlers. On Friday he had 30 children from Raglan, Eglinton, Kelso and South Bathurst Schools teaching them the fundamentals of lawn bowls. Well done Ross.
The Junior Development Program continues to operate every Saturday morning at 10.00am with Ross, Mick Sewell, Paul and Judy Rodenhuis continuing to offer their valued assistance.
Once again we thank Bathurst Real Estate for their sponsorship of this program as nothing happens without sponsorship and volunteers.
Also, for seniors, there is coaching available each Monday morning at 10am.
Come along for some fun, friendship and enjoyment with Gordon Adams and Paul Rodenhuis.
