Emergency services were called to Cope Road, Cope, about 50km north of Mudgee, around 7.40am on Thursday following reports a Toyota Hilux had left the road and hit a tree.

The driver and sole occupant, a 20-year-old man, died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

Officers from Orana-Mid Western Police District have started inquiries into the crash and will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.

The road will be closed for some time with local traffic diversions in place.
