MAJELLAN
By Bob the Bowler
This week’s Tuesday afternoon Social Bowls Competition attracted three rinks of triples with Tiger Smith, Barry Quigley and Ron McGarry scoring a close 20-19 win over Noel Witney, Barry Quigley and Bob Bembrick.
Scores were even after the second and fourth ends with the Witney team taking a narrow lead to the fifth, before the Smith team scored a three then six to jump out to a 12-4 lead after the seventh end.
They were able to maintain the lead until the last end but not without fending off the sustained efforts of the Witney team, who tried but just couldn’t bridge the gap despite scoring on 13 ends to the Smith team’s eight.
Terry Burke, Ray Minogue and John Bosson collected a 23-12 win over Kevin Howard, Frank Farrell and Gus Thurgood, after the early ends indicated it was going to be a much closer affair.
Scores were 4-4 after the sixth end when the Burke team scored a three and then two ends later a five, which gave them a 12-6 lead which was never headed.
Steady scoring throughout the match by the Burke team proved the difference.
Garry Cameron, Robert McLean and Paul Kennedy scored a 21-11 win over Scot Chapman, Terry Clarke and Robert Rooke, after an early jump to lead 4-0 after the third end.
By the close of the sixth end, the Cameron team led 8-1, but the Chapman team came back to level at 8-8 by the close of the tenth end.
It was 10-10 after the 14th end and the Chapman team scored again to lead for the first time 11-10.
But that was the end of the Chapman team with the Cameron team coming home like Winks scoring 11 in the last six ends to win going away.
The Saturday Afternoon Social Competition also attracted three rinks of triples with Peter Naylor, Daryl Shurmer and Ron McGarry taking the game and daily rink prize with a 24-11 win over Tiger Smith, Greg Halet and George Ballard.
The early ends were all the Smith team with them leading 4-1 after the fourth end.
A three-end run for seven points then put the Naylor team in front 8-4 and they held the lead to the finish line improving as the game went on.
The Smith team reached double figures in the 18th end but the earlier four and a five in the 17th for the Naylor team, proved the key difference.
John Hobson, Gus Thurgood and Ray Minogue scored a 31-13 win over Peter Drew, back for a rare Saturday game, Trevor Sharpen and Scot Chapman.
Scores were 2-2 after the second, 3-3 after the fourth, 6-6 after the seventh and 10-10 after the tenth end, but it went pear shaped from there for the Drew team, despite leading 11-10 in the 11th end.
A seven-end run for 15 points by the Hobson team blew the Drew team out of the park and then they scored another four in the last end to put the icing on the cake.
Tim Pickstone, Ted Parker, pleasingly back to good health, and David Josh collected a 29-11 win over Noel Witney, Robert McLean and Tony Press.
The Pickstone team charged out of the gate with a five-end run to lead 9-0 after just five ends.
A five in the eighth and 13th ends for the Pickstone team powered them out to an unassailable 23-5 lead after the 13th and the Witney team could on grin and bear it for an 18 point margin loss.
The Majellan/Wallerawang Challenge is coming up on the 25th November and teams are now being finalised.
The Majellan players will travel to Wallerawang for this final round for the year and it would be great to make it three wins in a row.
The Zone 4 Pennant Forum will be held at the Yeoval Bowling Club on Saturday, December 15, by which time the names of all potential players will need to be provided to the Zone Match Committee.
Majellan has indicated that a team will be nominated for the Five’s and Seven’s series for the 2019 Pennant season and the final details of how that will impact on players will be determined at the Yeoval Forum.
Renovations on the Brian McIntosh Green are progressing well with the completion of laser levelling.
Grass cover is returning well and grooming is in full swing, thanks to the volunteer greens management team and mother nature.
A difficult week at the Majellan Club readers with all members feeling the loss of our departed friend.
So until next time, a reflection from the ancient Philosopher Pericles, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
