Students from Kelso High, Carenne School and The Scots School competed with each other in a series of fun activities that tested their knowledge of fire fighting operations.
Facilitated by the Chifley/Lithgow Rural Fire Service [RFS] team, the event also featured a graduation ceremony to recognise the students who have completed the program.
“It’s a fun day for students to compete against each other, and then we do their official graduation ceremony,” Chifley/Lithgow RFS operational officer Rebecca Phillips said.
The graduation ceremony was attended by NSW RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons and Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee.
The cadet program started in 2005, and over the years the initiative has incorporated various schools throughout Bathurst, Oberon and Lithgow.
“On any given year, up to half a dozen of the cadets involved in the program end up joining their local brigade as a volunteer,” Ms Phillips said.
“Some former cadets are still active members of their brigades to this day.”
