While Mudgee won the toss and elected to bat, its players struggled to score runs from the first ball as the entire Bathurst bowling attack impressed.
Mudgee’s innings lasted just 22 overs and produced only 31 runs, leaving an easy target for the visitors to chase.
Each of the Bathurst bowlers struck as they put their side in a strong position, with both Mack Hutchings (3-1 off four overs) and Charlie Rendall (2-1 off three) in particular impressing.
Still, even with a small chase ahead of his players, Bathurst coach Phil Newton knew that there was no room for complacency. He stressed that message at the innings break and his side listened.

“It was a low total with 31 and you never know. The conditions were tricky, you never know what might happen, but we went out there and we passed their total,” he said.
Bathurst took eight overs to run down the required total, finishing at 2-34. Hugh Taylor top-scored with 18 not-out, his knock including three boundaries.
The win added to Bathurst’s opening round victory over Orange and while Newton was pleased with his players, he also praised the effort of the less experienced Mudgee outfit.
“It was a good result. Mudgee are a young side, most of their side will play next year, our guys have had a years’ experience and that makes them better for it,” he said.
“To Mudgee’s credit, they never gave up, they kept trying, but our guys played really well.

“They bowled a good line and length and bowled to the conditions, we’ve got a good bowling attack.
“I said to the guys earlier if we win the toss, we will bat and let them chase because I’ve got all the confidence in what we get we can bowl the side out.
“It was a great day, and we got to come home a bit earlier which was even nicer.”
Bathurst and Mudgee will meet again in the fourth round of the competition on December 16, but this time they will act as hosts.
Newton will be looking for a repeat result to keep his side on top of the ladder.
